The Finger Lakes Boating Museum has launched an engaging new series called Coffee Chat, inviting the public to connect with the captains behind the stories of the region’s waterways. This series promises a blend of history, expertise, and fascinating tales from the museum’s seasoned captains.

Included with museum admission and free for members, the Coffee Chat series will feature three captivating presentations. Each session begins at 10:30 a.m. on its respective date, offering attendees a chance to gain unique insights into the Finger Lakes’ maritime heritage.

The series will begin on January 16 with Captain Dave Rockwell, who also serves as the captain of The William Scandling, a research vessel for Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Rockwell’s presentation will explore the research techniques employed aboard the vessel, highlighting the crew’s efforts in mapping the lakebed and uncovering remnants from the steamboat and canal era.

On February 13, Captain Rob Whitcomb will take the stage to discuss the restoration of The Pat II, a century-old tour boat that graces the waters of Keuka Lake. Whitcomb’s talk will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the meticulous renovation process, detailing the challenges and triumphs of preserving this historic vessel.

The final session on March 13 will feature Captain Doug Vittum, a well-known guide aboard The Pat II. Vittum will share the rich history of the Taylor Wine Company, including the vital role of grape transportation and the production of champagne-method sparkling wine around Keuka Lake.

Open to the public, the Coffee Chat series does not require preregistration, though it is welcome. For further details, visit the Finger Lakes Boating Museum’s website at www.flbm.org.
