“Esperanza Mansion, Late Autumn”, The Mansion at Keuka Lake! Majestic!!

15×30″, oil on canvas by Ellen Bradshaw, Ellenbradshaw.com

The Finger Lakes region is rich in history and The Mansion at Keuka Lakes is no exception. In 1838, The Mansion was built on a bluff overlooking Keuka Lake by John Nicholas Rose, a farmer from Virginia, who became one of the area’s most prominent and wealthy citizens.

Known originally as Esperanza, the 2½ story mansion is a Greek Revival architectural masterpiece, featuring a massive two-story portico composed of four Ionic columns, a spacious porch entrance, and classic interior detail. The Rose family lived on the estate until 1870, at which point it passed to various owners who used it as a family home, updating it along the way. Over the years, The Mansion has also been a winery, art gallery, and bed and breakfast. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
