Marilyn E. Vreeland passed away April 3 in the 103rd year of her life. She was born in Queens to Rosa and Thomas Eimer.
Immersed in the multicultural background of her Jackson Heights neighborhood, Lyn developed her love of languages. She earned a B.A. from UVM where she met Howard C. Vreeland. They married in 1943 just before he shipped out to serve in WWII.
Lyn obtained a M.A. from AU and taught Latin and English for 30 years, most of those in Scio. She served in the NEA, wrote curricula, and was actively involved as advisor to student-centered clubs and classes. Her body has gone to UB where she will continue to teach students.
Lyn’s hobbies included genealogy, shopping, antiquing, and needlework, and she solved NYT Sunday crossword puzzles, in record time. She enjoyed dogs, seafood and chocolate and although she never held a driver’s license, loved road trips and particularly enjoyed her European travels. Lyn often entertained family with stories of adventures with her siblings Tom and Lois.
She was predeceased by her siblings, and husband and is survived by her children, Neal (Gail) Vreeland, Valerie (Charles Yazak) Vreeland, Hilary (Loren) Peck; grandchildren Oak Duke V, Justin Vreeland, Ethan Duke, Avery Peck, Anne Peck and great granddaughter Ava Duke as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is planned for immediate family.
