The Hammondsport Volunteer Fire Department is calling on community members to consider joining their team and learn more about what it takes to be a firefighter. As part of their 2025 recruitment effort, the department is hosting an Open House on Sunday, April 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This family-friendly event will offer a hands-on look at fire department operations and training activities. Attendees will have the chance to try on fire gear, learn how to use a fire hose, and participate in hose rolls and hose throws. One of the highlights includes riding 100 feet up in the aerial bucket on the department’s ladder truck.
Other interactive opportunities include fire truck rides, a door breach simulator, and mingling with current firefighters to learn more about their roles and responsibilities. For younger visitors, there will be kid-friendly activities and a chance to get up close with the equipment.
Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served during the event.
“If you’ve ever been curious about what it takes to be a firefighter, or you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community, this is the perfect opportunity,” the department said in a release.
The Hammondsport Fire Department, established in 1855, continues to serve with dedication and pride, relying on volunteers to keep the community safe. They encourage all interested individuals to “stop in and see what we do and how we train.”
