Penn Yan – A series of improvement projects at the Yates County Airport are gaining momentum, though local officials are working to address a modest funding gap tied to one of the upgrades.
County leaders have approved plans for a new hangar at the airport, a project expected to expand capacity and generate additional revenue through future lease agreements. However, bids for the construction came in higher than anticipated, exceeding available state funding by roughly $87,000.
To keep the project on track, officials are now considering options to cover the shortfall. Possible solutions include using money from the county’s capital fund or making adjustments to building materials and design to reduce costs.
Despite the financial hurdle, the hangar project remains a priority due to its potential long-term benefits. Increased hangar space is expected to support airport growth and provide a new source of ongoing revenue.
In addition to the hangar development, airport officials are also planning upgrades to runway lighting. That project is tied to federal funding approval and is expected to enhance safety and operations once completed.
Local lawmakers are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks as they finalize how to proceed with both projects, balancing immediate costs with the anticipated economic and operational gains for the airport.
