Historic Finger Lakes Winery to Close After 166 Years, Property Listed for Sale

Staff Report / April 28, 2026

One of the most historic wineries in the Finger Lakes region is preparing to close its doors after more than a century and a half in operation.

Pleasant Valley Wine Company, recognized as the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes, is ceasing operations after 166 years and has been listed for sale, according to published reports.

Founded in 1860, the winery holds a significant place in American wine history. It was established by Charles Champlin and a group of investors and later became known as the first bonded winery in the United States, a designation tied to federal tax and production regulations.

Located just south of Hammondsport near Keuka Lake, the winery built its reputation on sparkling wines, including its well-known Great Western Champagne label. Over the decades, it earned international recognition, including awards in Europe during the 19th century.

The property itself includes historic buildings, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting its long-standing role in the development of the Finger Lakes wine industry.

The decision to close comes as the winery and its associated brands are put on the market. Reports indicate the sale includes multiple wine labels tied to the operation, offering a rare opportunity for potential buyers to acquire a cornerstone of the region’s wine heritage.

The closure marks the end of an era for the Finger Lakes, a region now home to more than 100 wineries but rooted in early pioneers like Pleasant Valley, which helped establish winemaking as a major industry in upstate New York.

No timeline has been publicly confirmed for when operations will officially cease or when a sale might be finalized.
