“Thunder in the Glen” Brings Corvette Enthusiasts to Watkins Glen

Staff Report / May 17, 2026

Hundreds of Corvette enthusiasts gathered in Watkins Glen this weekend as the annual “Thunder in the Glen” event returned to Schuyler County, celebrating America’s iconic sports car with cruises, displays, and community activities throughout the Finger Lakes region.

The multi-day event, organized by the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce and local Corvette groups, drew visitors from across New York and neighboring states. Activities included scenic drives around Seneca Lake, downtown car displays, social gatherings, and laps around the historic Watkins Glen International race circuit.

Organizers said the event highlights the long-standing connection between Watkins Glen and motorsports history. Watkins Glen became internationally known in the 1940s and 1950s for its road racing events before the construction of the permanent raceway in 1956. Today, the village remains a major tourism destination for automotive enthusiasts visiting the Finger Lakes.

Participants showcased Corvettes from multiple generations, including classic models from the 1950s and modern high-performance editions. Corvette owners also took part in organized cruises through Schuyler, Yates, and Seneca counties, giving spectators opportunities to view the vehicles throughout the region.

Event organizers said “Thunder in the Glen” continues to serve as both a celebration of Corvette culture and an economic boost for local businesses during the spring tourism season. Restaurants, hotels, wineries, and shops throughout Watkins Glen and the surrounding Finger Lakes communities typically see increased visitor traffic during the annual gathering.
