Officials Warn Boaters of Seneca Lake Hazards Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

Staff Report / May 20, 2026

With Memorial Day weekend approaching and boating activity expected to increase across the Finger Lakes, officials are warning residents and visitors about hazardous conditions currently affecting Seneca Lake. Authorities said recent weather and changing lake conditions have created floating debris and other navigation hazards that could pose risks to boaters.

Emergency officials in Schuyler County said high water levels and runoff from recent storms have contributed to debris entering the lake, including logs, branches, and other floating objects that may be difficult to see, especially during nighttime boating. Officials urged boaters to use caution, reduce speeds when appropriate, and remain alert while navigating the lake.

Authorities also reminded boaters to wear life jackets, ensure vessels are equipped with required safety gear, and closely monitor changing weather conditions before heading onto the water. Officials noted that cold water temperatures remain a concern during the early boating season and can increase the risk of hypothermia if someone falls overboard.

The warning comes as communities around Seneca Lake prepare for one of the busiest tourism weekends of the year. Seneca Lake, the largest Finger Lake by volume, attracts thousands of boaters, anglers, and visitors each summer and is regularly patrolled by local marine units and emergency responders.
