WATKINS GLEN – Community members are being invited to help preserve the legacy of former Watkins Glen Mayor Laurie DeNardo through a new memorial planned for Clute Park. The nonprofit organization Watkins Glen Promotions has launched a fundraising campaign to support the creation and installation of the tribute, which organizers say will provide residents and visitors with a place to remember DeNardo’s many contributions to the village. Donations are now being accepted as planning for the memorial moves forward. DeNardo, a lifelong Watkins Glen resident, died in March following a 10-month battle with cancer.
Organizers selected Clute Park as the site for the memorial because of DeNardo’s longtime commitment to the waterfront and community events held there. In addition to serving as mayor beginning in 2023, DeNardo spent eight years as a village trustee and was involved with numerous local organizations, including Watkins Glen Promotions and the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Community leaders have described her as a dedicated public servant whose leadership left a lasting impact on Watkins Glen.
Residents wishing to contribute to the memorial project may make donations through Watkins Glen Promotions. Contributions can be submitted by check payable to Watkins Glen Promotions and mailed to P.O. Box 332, Watkins Glen, NY 14891. Donations are also being accepted through Venmo. Organizers said the memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to DeNardo’s years of service and her deep commitment to the Watkins Glen community.
