Tragedy in Transit: Ithaca Police Launch Investigation After Bus Passenger Discovered Unresponsive

Staff Report / July 8, 2026

ITHACA – Detectives are working to piece together the final moments of a transit commuter following a grim discovery aboard a public bus. The Ithaca Police Department has officially launched a formal investigation into the unattended death of a passenger that occurred late Tuesday morning.

Emergency communications went out at approximately  1:11 a.m when patrol officers and Tompkins County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Hancock Street. Responding units arrived to find a male passenger,  52-year-old Anthony Zeigler of Ithaca, who was completely unresponsive. Despite the swift arrival of first responders and emergency medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting police to secure the vehicle and process it for evidence.

As the investigation moves into its initial stages, Ithaca police are relying on forensic science and public cooperation to clear up the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s sudden passing:

  • No Immediate Foul Play Suspected: While detectives are processing the scene thoroughly, investigators noted that a preliminary assessment of the body and the surrounding area did not reveal any immediate signs of foul play.
  • A Public Call for Information: Police leaders are actively encouraging anyone who was riding the bus late Tuesday morning or who may have witnessed anything unusual near the Hancock Street stop to contact the Ithaca Police Department’s tip line.
