According to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, local law enforcement agencies have seen an uptick in reported telephone scams where callers claim to be law enforcement personnel. Officials emphasize that residents should never rely solely on details provided by an unsolicited caller to confirm their identity.
Key guidelines and verification steps advised by law enforcement include:
- Verify Caller Identity: Anyone receiving a suspicious call from someone claiming to represent a police department or sheriff’s office should independently verify the caller’s credentials with the agency in question.
- Direct Verification Number: Residents who receive a questionable call from someone claiming to be with the Yates County Sheriff’s Office are advised to hang up and contact the agency directly at 315-536-4438 to speak with an official deputy.
- Avoid Unsolicited Info: Officials warn against trusting phone numbers, badge numbers, or claims provided directly by an unverified incoming caller.
