OP-ED: Are health insurance companies the new loan sharks?

“The American health industry is broken”

By Patty MacEwan, Fillmore NY

Are health insurance companies the new loan sharks? I have to wonder after seeing Highmark request a 22.2% increase for a Medicare supplemental premium.

Inflation last year was 2.7%. Why could they possibly need an increase 19.5% above inflation? How much profit will be enough for Highmark? Are seniors and the disabled now covering the Buffalo Bills stadium naming rights for Highmark. Maybe tamper down your marketing expenses Highmark.

Mine is just one example. I feel for families that are seeing higher increases, or that have had to forego health insurance overall. The loss of ACA subsidies and other negative repercussions because of the big beautiful bill (ugly) are starting to have a snowball effect. I wonder how long our hospitals will be able to sustain all of the increase in uninsured patients before they can’t afford to treat people or in a worst-case scenario close. And if you’re one of the people that thinks I have a good plan from my employer or union, this doesn’t affect me – good luck with that mentality. Corporations aren’t going to accept these increases and will cut back coverage or benefits or both. The American health insurance industry is broken.

We need Congress to fix this soon or in a few years everyone but millionaires and billionaires will be priced out of the system. The current Congress has shown they are incapable of enacting legislation to help their constituents.

Use your power to vote them out November 3.
