Potentially dangerous bacteria was confirmed on the eastern shore near Sampson State Park

We recently received several photos of unusual debris near Lakeshore Landing, north of Sampson State Park. A volunteer collected a sample, which the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges visually identified as benthic cyanobacteria of the genus Oscillatoria.
We’re asking the public to be aware and keep an eye out for unusual mats or clumps in or along the lake. If you see something you suspect could be benthic cyanobacteria, avoid contact and keep children and pets away.
