NEWARK, N.Y. — Rochester Regional Health (RRH) recently welcomed local high school students for its popular MedQuest summer workshop, an interactive program designed to spark interest in health care careers. After several years of introducing students to health care at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, MedQuest expanded this year to include Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic, giving participants an opportunity to experience two community hospitals and explore even more career paths.
MedQuest is designed for incoming ninth through 12th grade students interested in exploring careers in health care. Throughout the camp, students learned directly from health care professionals and participated in interactive workshops, demonstrations and hands-on activities designed to introduce them to different areas of the field.
Students had the opportunity to learn basic suturing techniques, explore physical therapy, learn about wound care and practice giving injections using oranges. They also learned about careers in nursing, radiology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, dietary and nutrition services, medicine and surgery, infection prevention and other areas of health care.
The camp also featured a special visit from Mercy Flight Central professionals, who shared information about careers in emergency and first responder services.
“Many students come to MedQuest with a general interest in health care, but they may not realize just how many different career paths are available,” said Dena Chapman, RN, Nurse Educator at Rochester Regional Health. “Our goal is for students to leave with a better understanding of the opportunities available to them, some new skills and experiences, and hopefully a lot of enthusiasm about a future in health care.”
MedQuest also plays an important role in Rochester Regional Health’s efforts to build a strong pipeline of future health care professionals. With health care worker shortages continuing to impact communities nationwide, introducing young people to the breadth of careers available in health care is an important step toward inspiring the next generation of nurses, therapists, technicians, physicians and other health care professionals to pursue careers serving their own communities.
