The Road Patrol Division is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the citizens and visitors of Yates County. This Division is the most visible unit within the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies work in patrol zones, assigned by the shift Sergeant or Officer in Charge (OIC). Deputies are responsible for patrolling the roads in the county, looking for illegal activity, conducting traffic enforcement, and responding to police calls for service. Deputies are assigned additional details by their sergeant. A large number of our calls for service occur in an area where all four zones come together. We refer to this area as “Central”, and it includes the Village of Penn Yan, moving outward approximately three miles in every direction. This geographic area, we refer to as “central” is more densely populated by residential and commercial properties. The Central zone also has many tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants. The Windmill, Keuka College and Keuka Lake State Park all fall inside this Central Zone.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) makes up the investigative services unit of the Sheriff’s Office employing four criminal investigators and one Lieutenant to oversee the unit. The investigators are responsible for handling felony and serious misdemeanor related crimes including drug offenses, burglaries, and sex crimes. They also follow-up and assist road patrol members with investigations that require substantial time and resources. CID members oversee the collection, processing of property and evidence, and are responsible for packaging, labeling, and storing all evidence collected by members of the department. Once this is completed, all evidence is stored securely at the Yates County Public Safety Building.
Both Road Patrol and CID staff also make up teams that serve in several ancillary services for the agency. These teams include but are not limited to the Firearms Training Unit, Child Safety Seat Unit, Fire Investigation Team, Accident Investigation Unit, and K9 Unit. Specialized training is regularly conducted for agency members that serve in these additional capacities.
