SNAP ABAWD Time Limit Reset: New 36-Month Period Opens Eligibility for Returning Applicants

Steuben County / October 11, 2026

As of October 1, 2026, a NEW 36-month period has started for the SNAP Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) time limit.

Countable months from the previous period have been cleared.

If you previously lost SNAP benefits because you reached the 3-month ABAWD time limit, you may now be able to receive SNAP benefits again.

What should you do?

If you had your own SNAP case and your benefits ended because of the ABAWD time limit, you can reapply for SNAP now.

If someone in your household was removed from your SNAP case because they reached the ABAWD time limit, you can report a change and ask to have that person added back to your case. You do NOT have to wait until your next recertification.

Individuals will be screened to determine whether they meet an exemption from the ABAWD time limit. Those who are subject to the time limit will need to meet applicable work requirements to continue receiving SNAP beyond their three countable months.

New ABAWD period: October 1, 2026 – September 30, 2029

Please share this information with anyone who may have lost SNAP benefits because of the ABAWD time limit. They may be eligible again!
