Finger Lakes Towns of Geneva, Watkins Glen and Hammondsport Earn High Marks for Craft Beer

Jim Moore / December 9, 2025

Three Finger Lakes communities — Geneva, NY, Watkins Glen, NY and Hammondsport, NY — have been named among New York State’s best small-town craft-beer destinations, according to a recent ranking by World Atlas.

Geneva — Lakeside beers meet vintage barns

Geneva’s craft-beer scene stands out thanks to a trio of standout breweries offering both quality brews and inviting atmospheres. Leading the way is Brewery Ardennes, a Belgian-style taproom housed in a restored 1909 sheep barn — a unique setting that also earned it the title of “New York Belgian Brewery of the Year” in 2024.

Also on the map are Lake Drum Brewing and Watershed Brewing Co. — both downtown favorites. Watershed, located just off Seneca Lake, features ten draft lines, a full kitchen, indoor and outdoor seating, and live music on weekends.

With this mix of lakeside scenery, historic charm, and craft-beer variety, Geneva is proving itself a must-stop for beer lovers visiting the Finger Lakes.

Watkins Glen — Scenic lake views and lively taprooms

Watkins Glen brings together natural beauty and a bustling brewery culture. Near the harbor, Upstate Brewing Co. draws locals and visitors alike with rotating taps, food trucks, and social events like bingo nights — all steps from Seneca Lake’s City Pier.

For sweeping lake views and a broad beer selection, Grist Iron Brewing Co. (just outside Watkins Glen) offers roughly 15 taps and a relaxed setting overlooking the water.

Moreover, Watkins Glen’s draw goes beyond beer — the town is also known for its beautiful state-park trails, the charming Seneca Lake waterfront, and a community vibe that blends laid-back and lively.

Hammondsport — Small town, cozy beers & lakeside charm

At the southern end of Keuka Lake, Hammondsport punches above its size when it comes to craft beer. Anchored by Finger Lakes Beer Company and Brewery of Broken Dreams, the town offers beer lovers small-batch brews and the kind of relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere often missing from larger cities.

Nearby, Steuben Brewing Company has even inspired a beer-themed bike club called “Pedals for Pilsners,” which promises rides that end with fresh pours and snacks.

For travelers looking to pair scenic lake views with simple, quality brews — without the crowds — Hammondsport stands out as a classic Finger Lakes find.

What this ranking means for the Finger Lakes region

The recognition from World Atlas underscores how the Finger Lakes — long known for wineries — has matured into a hub for diverse craft-beer culture, with dozens of small breweries sprinkled around the lakes.

For beer fans, the trio of Geneva, Watkins Glen, and Hammondsport offers a convenient and varied “brewery trail” experience: lakeside patios, cozy barns, waterfront hops, and laid-back small-town vibes.

For local economies, this spotlight can draw more visitors during both warm and cooler months — benefiting not just breweries but restaurants, accommodations, and other small businesses.
