Corning Police Recruit Arrested After Independent State Police Domestic Investigation

Staff Report / February 22, 2026

A recruit with the City of Corning Police Department has been arrested and charged following a criminal investigation into multiple domestic-related incidents, authorities announced this week.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, members of the New York State Police Troop E Violent Crime Investigation Team took Dylan J. Ellsworth into custody at the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy in Big Flats, where he was attending police training.

The investigation began at the request of Corning Police Chief Kenzie M. Spaulding, who referred the matter to state police to ensure an independent review after allegations were made by Ellsworth’s former partner. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between August and December 2025, and the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office authorized the state police to proceed with the inquiry.

Ellsworth was transported to the State Police barracks in Painted Post for processing. He now faces multiple charges stemming from the investigation, including:

  • Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree — a Class E felony
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child — Class A misdemeanor
  • Assault in the Third Degree — Class A misdemeanor
  • Criminal Obstruction of Breathing — Class A misdemeanor

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Steuben County Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) Court. Law enforcement said an order of protection will be sought on behalf of the alleged victim and child.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details about the specific nature of the allegations have been released. As with any criminal case, Ellsworth is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
