Volunteers Needed to Help Seniors Remain Independent in Steuben and Chemung Counties

Staff Report / March 17, 2026

A Southern Tier nonprofit is seeking volunteers willing to lend their time to assist older residents in Steuben and Chemung counties with everyday needs.

Faith in Action Southern Tier New York is currently recruiting community members to help provide support services that allow seniors to remain in their homes and maintain independence. The organization connects volunteers with residents age 60 and older who may need occasional help with tasks that have become difficult to manage alone.

Volunteer opportunities include providing rides to medical appointments, helping with errands such as grocery shopping, offering friendly visits for companionship, and assisting with light household tasks or seasonal yard work. These services are offered at no cost to the seniors who receive them.

The program operates through a network of volunteers who donate their time to support older adults living independently in the community. Organizers say even small acts of assistance can make a significant difference in helping seniors stay connected and continue living safely at home.

Mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers who provide transportation, and those interested in helping will complete an orientation and background check before being matched with service opportunities.

Community members interested in volunteering or learning more about available opportunities can contact Faith in Action at 607-324-1138. Organizers say volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome, and even a few hours of time can have a meaningful impact on local seniors
