Yates County Considers Formation of Specialized Rescue Teams

Staff Report / June 5, 2026

PENN YAN – Yates County officials are exploring the creation of specialized rescue teams to enhance emergency response capabilities for incidents that require advanced training and equipment. The proposal was discussed during a recent meeting of the Yates County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee, where emergency services leaders outlined the potential benefits of establishing dedicated teams for technical rescue situations that fall outside the scope of routine emergency responses.

According to county officials, the proposed teams could be trained to respond to incidents such as water rescues, rope rescues, confined-space emergencies, and other specialized situations that require highly skilled personnel. Supporters of the initiative said the teams would help strengthen local preparedness and provide additional resources for first responders throughout the county. Discussions have focused on identifying staffing needs, training requirements, equipment costs, and how the teams would be integrated into the county’s existing emergency response framework.

County leaders emphasized that the proposal remains in the evaluation stage and that additional planning and discussion will be needed before any final decisions are made. Officials said they will continue reviewing operational needs, funding considerations, and regional partnerships as they determine whether specialized rescue teams would improve public safety services for Yates County residents. The matter is expected to be revisited as county officials gather more information and assess the long-term feasibility of the program. A public meeting to discuss the measure will be held  June 8 at 1 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers at the Yates County Office Building.
