Staff Report / June 30, 2026

PENN YAN — A standard shift turned into a race against the clock last week when local law enforcement and emergency medical teams combined forces to pull a resident back from the brink of tragedy.

The Penn Yan Police Department revealed details of a dramatic June 24 rescue, crediting the lightning-fast intervention of three local officers with saving the life of a man experiencing a medical crisis. Responding to an urgent dispatch regarding an unconscious individual, the arriving officers, Gabriel Wood and Ken Eldridge, along with Investigator Wayne Marsh, found a man in his 70s was down on the floor, blue in the face, and had stopped breathing.

Faced with a rapidly closing window for survival, the emergency responders fell back on their training, instantly dividing tasks to maximize efficiency. Officials have highly praised the seamless coordination between the first-arriving officers and the subsequent medical teams, noting that their combined rapid-response protocol directly altered what could have been a tragic outcome.

The life-saving operation unfolded in a matter of critical moments, relying on a textbook execution of emergency medical procedures:

  • Immediate Resuscitation: Recognizing that the victim was hypoxic, the officers immediately initiated hands-on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to manually pump oxygenated blood to the man’s vital organs.
  • Defibrillator Deployment: Simultaneously, Officer Ken Eldridge dashed back to a patrol cruiser to retrieve an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), while Investigator Wayne Marsh assisted in managing the high-stress scene.
  • The Lifesaving Shock: Upon hooking up the AED, the device analyzed the patient’s cardiac rhythm and advised a shock. The officers administered a single electrical burst, which successfully shocked the man’s heart back into a regular rhythm, causing him to instantly resume breathing on his own.
  • Critical Air Transport: Penn Yan Ambulance personnel quickly assumed advanced patient care at the scene, while police units provided rolling traffic blocks to clear a rapid path to a nearby helicopter landing zone, allowing the patient to be airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Thanks to the decisive intervention, authorities confirmed that the individual has successfully pulled through the acute phase of the medical emergency and remains in stable condition. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of how vital immediate CPR and accessible AEDs are to the survival of rural residents when every second matters.
