AUBURN – A former correctional officer has pleaded guilty to multiple charges in Cayuga County Court, admitting he possessed cocaine and smuggled heroin into the Cayuga Correctional Facility.
According to Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci, 30-year-old Gregory Gorman of Moravia pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, first-degree promoting prison contraband, and official misconduct.
The charges originate from events occurring in March. Gorman admitted to possessing more than one-half ounce of cocaine and acknowledged that, while employed as a correctional officer, he knowingly and illegally introduced heroin into the facility.
For the controlled substance possession charge, Gorman faces a determinate three-year state prison sentence with two years of post-release supervision. He will also receive an indeterminate sentence of one-and-one-third to four years for promoting prison contraband, to be served concurrently with the drug charge. Additionally, he is set to receive the maximum jail sentence on the official misconduct misdemeanor.
A mandatory condition of the plea agreement required Gorman to resign from his role with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). According to prosecutors, he has already done so.
District Attorney Antonacci strongly condemned Gorman’s actions, stating, “This defendant betrayed the trust placed in him as a correctional officer and put the safety and security of our correctional facilities at risk. Drugs have no place inside our correctional facilities, and we will continue to work closely with DOCCS and law enforcement to hold accountable anyone who attempts to bring contraband into our prisons.”
Gorman’s sentencing is scheduled for November. The case was investigated by the DOCCS Office of Special Investigations and prosecuted by Antonacci.
