ALBANY – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is calling on residents across the state to inspect local trees for signs of fungal infection and assist in collecting native seeds to support state conservation efforts.
State forestry officials report that an unusually rainy summer has led to a rise in fungal diseases affecting maple trees. While these leaf infections are typically cosmetic and rarely threaten the long-term health of mature trees, officials warn that oak wilt poses a far more severe threat, capable of killing susceptible oak species within weeks. Learning to properly identify tree species by leaf structure can assist property owners in detecting early signs of disease.
Alongside tree health monitoring, the DEC is inviting the public to gather native seeds to supply the state nursery, which provides saplings for regional reforestation and habitat restoration projects.
Key guidance from the DEC includes:
Maple Leaf Inspection: Look for dark, irregularly shaped markings on leaves, which typically indicate seasonal fungal activity rather than structural decay.
Oak Wilt Warning: Inspect oak trees for rapid leaf drop or wilting, as oak wilt requires swift action to prevent spreading to neighboring trees.
Seed Collection Drive: Residents can harvest mature native seeds for donation to the state nursery to aid future conservation planting programs.
Identification Assistance: Property owners are encouraged to use leaf characteristics to confirm tree species before reporting suspected diseased foliage to local extension offices or the DEC.
