Two Additional Measles Cases Confirmed in Yates County
No public exposure locations identified
Penn Yan, NY – Yates County Public Health (YCPH) is investigating two additional confirmed cases of measles in unvaccinated residents, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Yates County to three since the regional outbreak began. Both cases were confirmed on September 22, 2026. The individuals had not recently traveled and were likely exposed locally.
“Measles cases continue to be identified across the region, including in Yates County,” said Alyssa Broome-Quissimisse, Yates County Public Health Director. “The identification of two additional locally acquired cases highlights the importance of reviewing your vaccination status and ensuring you and your family are protected against measles. YCPH continues to investigate suspect cases, identify potential exposures, and monitor for further spread.”
Potential Exposures & Contact Tracing
At this time, no public exposure locations have been identified in connection with the additional cases. Because measles is a highly contagious airborne virus, YCPH is working closely with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and local health care providers to identify and directly contact all individuals who may have been exposed.
Risk to the Public
Individuals who are not immune to measles and are exposed are at risk for developing measles. Measles symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes, and a rash. Anyone who develops symptoms should call their health care provider before seeking medical care to help prevent exposing others.
The MMR vaccine is the single best way to prevent measles and its potentially serious complications. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles.
