Keuka Lake: Help harvest invasive water chestnut plants on August 1

Volunteers must register for 8am roundup

Watch VIDEO of water chestnut removal

From the Keuka Lake Association,

The Keuka Lake Association will be working with Yates County Soil & Water to conduct a water chestnut hand-pull on the morning of Thursday, August 1st. We are looking for about ten volunteers to help us with:

  1. Setting up and manning a tent with water/refreshments provided by Yates County Soil & Water. We would meet and set-up the tent around 7:30am near the boat launch in Penn Yan. The work starts at 8:00am and should be done around noon.
  2. Harvesting Water Chestnuts in kayaks/canoes. The Finger Lakes Museum will help provide kayaks for anyone who prefers not to bring their own. However, each volunteer should bring their own PFD. Harvesting will begin at 8:00-8:30am and wrap up around 12pm.
  • We will transport the plants back to the boat launch and then Soil and Water will transport the plants off site to be composted.
  • Please see video below to learn more.

If you are able to help in this effort, please RSVP to info@keukalakeassociation.org by Monday 7/29. Let us know how you are able to help and if you’d like to use a kayak provided by Finger Lake Museum.
