In a push to secure fair treatment for millions of public servants, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging the Senate to pass the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act. This legislation aims to enhance Social Security benefits for approximately 2.5 million Americans, including police officers, firefighters, teachers, and other government employees who often find themselves unfairly penalized under current laws.
Speaking at a virtual press conference, Senator Gillibrand highlighted the inequities of the existing system, which reduces Social Security benefits for retirees who also receive pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security’s payroll tax. This means that government workers who held private-sector jobs at any point in their careers often face significant cuts to their benefits.
The proposed Social Security Fairness Act seeks to repeal these provisions, ensuring retirees receive the full Social Security payments they have earned. The bill has already cleared the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, including affirmative votes from Representatives Langworthy and Tenney.
“This is about providing the retirement security that our public servants deserve after dedicating their lives to serving their communities,” said Gillibrand.
If passed by the Senate, the legislation could provide a lifeline for thousands of workers across the country, many of whom rely on these benefits to maintain their quality of life in retirement.
