A Penn Yan man is facing multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a brief chase before attempting to claim his car was stolen.
The incident began on November 25th, when Penn Yan Police observed John Cappelletti, 28, driving recklessly on Seneca Street. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but Cappelletti reportedly failed to comply, initiating a short pursuit. The chase ended at a residence on Lawrence Street, where Cappelletti abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
The following day, Cappelletti visited the Penn Yan Police Department to report that his car had been stolen. However, an investigation determined his claim to be false, linking him to the prior day’s pursuit.
Cappelletti has been charged with unlawful fleeing of a police officer and reckless driving. He was issued traffic and appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in Penn Yan Village Court at a later date.
Authorities remind residents that providing false information to law enforcement can result in additional legal consequences.
