Steuben County Clerk Judy Hunter has announced the launch of a new, free service designed to protect homeowners from deed and mortgage fraud. The “Fraud Alert” system allows property owners to receive timely notifications whenever a document is recorded under their name at the Steuben County Clerk’s Office.
In an effort to combat the growing threat of property fraud, where criminals illegally transfer property titles or take out fraudulent mortgages, the county is providing this vital tool to its residents.
“This is an easy way for homeowners to have peace of mind,” said County Clerk Judy Hunter. “By receiving immediate alerts, property owners can quickly identify and address any potentially fraudulent activity.”
The Fraud Alert system works by sending an email notification to registered property owners whenever a deed, mortgage, or other relevant document is recorded under their name. This allows homeowners to promptly verify the legitimacy of any recorded documents. Residents can then view the documents in question at the County Clerk’s Office.
