CCE Steuben Celebrates Agricultural Literacy Week

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano visits schools to read and talk farming with students

From CCE Steuben,

Steuben County, NY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County (CCE Steuben) proudly participated in the Annual New York Agricultural Literacy Week from March 17-21, 2025. This annual event celebrates New York agriculture by engaging elementary students with a specially selected book and hands-on activities.

This year’s featured book, The Pie That Molly Grew by Sue Heavenrich, took students on an exciting journey from planting a single seed to harvesting a pumpkin and turning it into a delicious pie for a celebration of gratitude. Volunteers across the state read the book to elementary students and facilitated an interactive activity related to the story.

CCE Steuben distributed 51 books to schools and public libraries throughout the county, reaching over 2,000 students and youth. A highlight of the week was New York State Assemblymember Phil Palmesano’s participation, where he read to over 70 students, inspiring young minds with the wonders of agriculture.

Agricultural Literacy Week fosters a connection between youth and the agricultural industry, emphasizing the importance of farming and food production in everyday life. CCE Steuben extends its gratitude to all volunteers and educators who helped make this program a success.
