Ontario County Launches Holiday DWI Enforcement Effort

Ontario County Sheriff Department Badge

Staff Report / July 1, 2025

Ontario County law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to prevent impaired driving over the Fourth of July weekend. Beginning Thursday and running through July 6, the Ontario County STOP-DWI program will partner with the Sheriff’s Office, Canandaigua and Geneva Police Departments, and Finger Lakes Community College Campus Police for a high-visibility campaign targeting drunk and drugged driving.

The Fourth of July is traditionally a time for celebration, but officials warn it also brings increased risk on the roads. “Multiple arrests were made during the Memorial Day campaign; let’s not repeat it,” said Kate Ott, Ontario County Public Health Director. “Fair warning: Don’t. Drive. Drunk.”

The local effort is part of a broader statewide initiative that includes increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints by New York State Police and municipal law enforcement agencies. Authorities hope heightened visibility and enforcement will deter impaired driving and reduce holiday-related crashes.
