The Shepherd/Malinois was 13 and showed up to work on the day he died

From the Yates County Sheriff,

It is with deep regret that we report the untimely passing of K9 Kinni assigned to Deputy Brandon Jensen on August 16, 2023 in the afternoon. He was a Shepherd/Malinois mix. Although age 13 he was an active K9 member of theYCSO Unit.

He participated in a K9 demonstration at a local school the morning of 8/16 and loved by the school kids.  He became ill in the afternoon, and Brandon took him to Eastview Veterinary Clinic where he underwent emergency surgery, and regretfully died during the operation of cardiac arrest. We greatly thank the staff at Eastview for their lifesaving efforts.

He was a faithful K9 member of YCSO involved in many searches, narcotic cases, and handler protection. He did countless number of demonstrations on his obedience, handler protection and search capabilities. He had been a partner to Deputy Brandon Jensen for 11.5 years. Deputy Jensen is also a NYS certified Trainer and Examiner.

Kinni originally joined the Sheriff’s Office K9 unit through a donation by the Penn Yan Vol. Ambulance Corps .Currently the unit has Deputy Chad Betts with “Ribo” who is near retirement, and is training his replacement “Rafi.” The other member is Deputy Seth Skelly with Magnum.

Sheriff Ron Spike honored Kinni with this statement:

“We are very prideful of the work that our K-9 Unit does for Yates County local law enforcement, and for our community, as well as other communities in the Finger Lakes region for special assistance calls for drug or missing/wanted person searches, evidence collection, building searches and narcotic detection. “Kinni was a great asset to us, and he will be greatly missed, especially by Brandon and family – may he rest in peace for his public service.”
