From the Steuben County Historical Society,
Organized touring groups entered Steuben’s economy after the Civil War, especially around Keuka Lake. Railroads brought visitors to Penn Yan or Hammondsport, after which steambats took them to destinations along the shore. This crowd, however, skipped the steamboat connection.
As 1900 neared, the bicycle finally gave Americans independent transportation – these energetic folks are making a winery stop, on Keuka’s west side. “Tune in” each Wednesday for our new mini-series, with photos of groups visiting Steuben… and groups of Steubeners visiting elsewhere!
