Atwater Vineyards Releases Exclusive Skin Ferment Pinot Gris 2020

Seneca Lake, NY – Atwater Vineyards, known for its commitment to crafting exceptional wines, has announced the release of its highly anticipated 2020 Pinot Gris Skin Ferment. With only 48 cases produced, this wine offers a rare opportunity to experience a pink grape vinified like a reserve red wine.

The 2020 Pinot Gris Skin Ferment spent an impressive 34 months aging in neutral oak barrels. Made from 100% Pinot Gris grapes, the wine underwent a unique process, including 20% whole cluster, 19 days of skin fermentation, and twice daily punch downs. The result is a deep copper, sometimes pale garnet color, with a complex flavor profile.

In the glass, this wine reveals notes of rhubarb, almond, dried cranberries, lemon rind, and toffee. It is textural with tea-like tannins, balanced by a stony minerality and moderate acidity. The wine pairs beautifully with nuts, kimchi, or pomegranate-glazed chicken.

Vineyard and Production Notes The 2020 growing season presented unique challenges and opportunities. The winter was mild with virtually no bud damage, and although April and May were cooler than average, delayed bud break occurred. May and June experienced significantly low rainfall, approximately 60% below average. However, July was warmer than average, leading to close-to-average Growing Degree Days (GDD) by the end of the month. Disease pressure was minimal throughout the season.

Other Notes Skin-contact wines, also known as “orange wines,” are white wines made like red wines. They ferment with the grape skins, which give the wine its color and unique characteristics.

For wine enthusiasts looking to explore something truly special, Atwater Vineyards’ 2020 Pinot Gris Skin Ferment offers a one-of-a-kind experience that showcases the winery’s dedication to quality and innovation. Learn more here
