Yates County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Collision with Injuries

Yates County, NY – A morning commute turned into a frightening ordeal for those involved in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Pre Emption Road and Havens Corners Road in the Town of Benton. The incident occurred on April 18th, 2024, at approximately 8:33 AM, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

According to the report from the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, the collision involved two vehicles: one driven by Lois H. Garman, 47, of Penn Yan, NY, and the other by Matthew R. Foote of Skaneateles, NY. Garman’s vehicle was westbound on Havens Corners Road when she failed to yield the right of way to Foote’s southbound vehicle on Pre Emption Road.

As a result of the crash, three individuals sustained injuries, including Garman, a 12-year-old minor, and an 8-year-old minor, all from Penn Yan, NY. Garman complained of shoulder pain, while the 12-year-old experienced head pain and the 8-year-old reported abdominal pain. Medical responders attended to the scene, with one minor being transported to Geneva General Hospital and the other to Strong Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with the Benton Fire Department and Penn Yan Ambulance, responded to the scene to provide assistance. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and charges are pending further review of the circumstances.

In addition to the injuries, Matthew Foote received a citation for operating an unregistered motor vehicle. Yates County Sheriff’s Office personnel present at the scene included Deputies Chisom and Newell, under the supervision of Sgt. Emerson. The incident was reported by Deputy Chisom and disseminated to the press and social media by Sgt. Emerson at 10:41 AM on April 18th, 2024.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office reminds all motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic laws, and yield the right of way to avoid such incidents.
