From Sheriff Allard,

It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. Many farmers have already completed their first cutting of hay, corn is up and grapes are growing. Here at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, our jail garden is in and growing well. May brought National Corrections Officer Week, National Police Week and our ninth annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service. At this service every year we remember our fallen first responder heroes and honor their memory. We also pay homage to their families and respect their sacrifice. Our Honor Guard presented the Colors for that ceremony and then on Memorial Day, for the Bath VA Memorial Day Service. I am proud to say that the Sheriff’s Office team that presented our National Colors at that service were all combat veterans, including a Purple Heart recipient. I am beyond grateful for our veterans’ service and humbled and honored to be able to work with these true real-life heroes.

June saw Memorial Services in the Schuyler and Ontario County Sheriff’s Offices also. Memorial Day saw parades and services across our great county, as we remember those who did not make it home from war. I was speaking with a fellow member of the county team about Gold Star Families the other day and he informed me that he was a Gold Star Family member as his brother had been killed in Operation Desert Storm. I have known this person for many years, and never knew of his family’s sacrifice. So often we do not know of the pain and loss those near us have suffered. It is a good lesson for us all.

At the Sheriff’s Office, your public servants were busy again. Our Corrections Division was still busy conducting the Basic Course in Corrections for our part-time Officers. Captain Mills and Lieutenant Wetherby cooked an appreciation luncheon for all staff. Investigator Ellison completed the Marine Patrol Vessel Operator Course, Deputy Dininny instructing. Deputy Swarthout and K9 Mac completed NYS Department of Homeland Security training on searching stadiums and schools for explosives. Deputy Owen completed the EMT Level 1 Instructor Course. Ms. Moir and Ms. Volz attended an Administrative Assistant Training Course provided by the New York State Sheriff’s Association. Deputy Nybeck became certified as an ASP Expandable Baton Instructor. Deputy Nybeck also completed a Drug Interdiction Course. Investigator Lewis and K9 Jack attended an Arson Investigator Training. Lieutenant Lock, Deputy Dininny, Undersheriff McNelis and Sheriff Allard met with the Keuka Lake Association Public Safety Committee. Deputy Saltsman and Sergeant Day participated in the Canisteo-Greenwood Mock DWI presentation while Dispatcher Clark and Deputy Butler participated in the Bath Haverling Mock DWI presentation. Sheriff Allard presented at the Lamoka-Waneta Lakes Association Meeting and taught Ethics at the Alfred Police Academy and attended the Hammondsport and Gang Mills Fire Banquets.

May was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with four death investigations, six assault investigations, two possession of a weapon investigations, eight burglary investigations, two obstruction of breathing investigations, two menacing investigations, seven criminal contempt investigations, one possession of stolen property investigation, one prison contraband investigation, one reckless endangerment investigation, three endangering the welfare of a child investigations, two fire investigations, nine larceny investigations, four grand larceny investigations, four harassment investigations, two stalking investigations, eleven criminal mischief investigations, two narcotics investigations, two forcible touching investigations, one jail contraband investigation, two unlawful imprisonment investigations, two trespass investigations and one illegal dumping investigation. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and five intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.

All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion and we received two commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.

We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression.

Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!
