Steuben County’s latest overdose statistics for May highlight ongoing concerns and efforts to address substance abuse issues within the community.
Steuben County’s Public Health Department has released the overdose statistics for May, revealing a total of 36 reported incidents, including one fatality and 12 cases where Narcan was administered.
Of the reported overdoses, five were attributed to opioids, while 22 cases did not specify the substance involved or were incomplete for review. The remaining nine incidents involved substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs, and others suspected to cause the overdose.
“May accounted for 36% of all reported overdoses in 2024,” stated Darlene Smith, Public Health Director. “We are committed to collaborating with our partners to provide assistance and reduce opioid-related overdoses in our community. Individuals in need are encouraged to utilize the support services offered by Steuben County Public Health and our partners.”
Training for Narcan administration is available both online at steubencountyny.gov/narcan and in person, with scheduling through Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee.
