“It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County”

From Steuben County Sheriff James Allard,

The sun is shining, the corn is growing and our lakes are busy with vacationers and visitors. We have hosted two boater safety courses so far this summer and hope to continue them monthly. We hope that all who enjoy our navigable waterways do so safely, wearing appropriate personal flotational devices on our lakes and waterways. Here at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, our jail garden is growing well. We wish all graduates congratulations and hope that many contemplate a life of public service. June brought the safe arrest of a Virginia fugitive wanted for murder and an arrest for an alleged murder in Woodhull. On the educational side, we revealed the “Emilee’s Challenge” trailer and on the grant front, we received another $601,000 in a NYS grant to install a county wide law enforcement records management system, benefitting every police agency in the county. The Corrections Division installed a body scanner to assist in reducing contraband entering the jail through the booking process.

Sadly, we saw the early and sudden death of Jerry Miller, a long-time servant of Steuben County Department of Public Works, and a great partner to the Sheriff’s Office and the Wineglass Marathon. Jerry will be greatly missed. His institutional knowledge, willingness to help and ingenuity to problem solve is irreplaceable. We pray for his family and share their grief. On a better note, we were able to celebrate the retirement of Cheryl Crocker, Director of Probation for Steuben County and another great partner in law enforcement. Congratulations Cheryl and many happy days to come!

At the Sheriff’s Office, your public servants were busy again. Our Corrections Division was still busy conducting the Basic Course in Corrections for our part-time and full time Officers. Our full time Corrections Officers recently who recently completed the Corrections Basic Course attended the NYS Firearms for Peace Officers Course. Deputy Ramirez instructed for two days at the Police Mountain Bicycle Course at SUNY Cortland. Deputy Brian Harrison completed the IPTM Traffic Crash Reconstruction Course. Investigator Lewis completed the NYS Mobilization Planning for Critical Missing Persons Course and the Child Abduction Response and Investigation Course. Sergeant Sciotti, Sergeant Wood and Deputy McHenry attended an instructor level course in Transition to Mounted Optics for Pistols. Sheriff Allard, Sergeant Sciotti, Officer Audinwood and Deputy Butler marched in the Dairy Festival and Colonial Days Parade, as the Sheriff’s Honor Guard. Sheriff Allard instructed at the SUNY Alfred Police Academy, teaching Ethics and Principled Policing. Captain Mills and Deputy Nybeck instructed Steuben County Probation in Conducted Energy Device and Oleoresin Capsicum training. Deputy Owen instructed them in “Stop the Bleed” training. Captain Mills, Deputy Warriner and Deputy McHenry taught in the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy as ALERRT instructors.

June was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with one murder investigation, six death investigations, three assault investigations, one possession of a weapon investigation, two burglary investigations, one obstruction of breathing investigation, two menacing investigations, two criminal contempt investigations, one possession of stolen property investigation, one prison contraband investigation, two reckless endangerment investigations, four endangering the welfare of a child investigations, one fire investigation, two larceny investigations, five grand larceny investigations, eleven harassment investigations, one animal abuse investigation, ten criminal mischief investigations, two narcotics investigations, one rape investigation, one sex offense investigation, two trespass investigations and two misuse of foodstamps investigations. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and three intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.

All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion and we received multiple commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.

We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression.

Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!
