From the Sun Investigative Team

An argument at a party the night before Fourth of July turned into an argument that resulted in a man charged with attempted murder and a Wellsville man who was shot in the leg in surgery today.

Amity-based State Police said Gregory S. Miller, 54, of Penndel, Pa., allegedly shot a 48-year-old Wellsville man in the leg after a verbal argument. Several shots were allegedly fired until the victim was struck as he walked away.

Miller was charged after the Bureau of Criminal Investigation reviewed the incident with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree criminal use of a weapon.

Miller was taken to the state police barracks in Amity, arraigned and sent to the Allegany County Jail pending a hearing. Penndel, Pa, is 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia and Miller allegedly owns property in Wellsville where he visits during the year.

Troopers said “after several hours of consuming alcohol, Miller had a verbal argument with the 48-year-old male victim” around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Witnesses tell the Sun the two had an argument and the victim was walking away.

Troopers said Miller then went to his vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, and returned with a Springfield Armory .45 ACP. Miller then discharged the firearm several times at the victim, striking him one time in the lower left leg. “Miller was disarmed and held down by the others at the party until Troopers arrived on scene and took Miller into custody,” troopers said.

The Wellsville man who was shot was taken to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville for the non life-threatening injury to his leg. However, he was transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for surgery today.

The NYSP Forensic Identification Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Allegany County District Attorney’s Office assisted in this investigation.
