NYSEG is diligently restoring power to thousands after severe storms battered Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties.
NYSEG faced a daunting task as nearly 30,000 customers lost power during Monday’s tempest, with about 20,000 still affected by Tuesday evening. The storms, characterized by heavy rain, hail, and gusts up to 70 mph, wreaked havoc, snapping utility poles and downing hundreds of wires across the region.
As of Tuesday afternoon, NYSEG deployed 112 line workers, with additional crews en route, alongside 10 tree crew personnel to aid in repairs. While most customers in populated areas were expected to regain power by Tuesday night, rural regions may face longer restoration times due to extensive damage. NYSEG’s outage map did not yet display estimated restoration times for affected areas.
NYSEG emphasized public safety as its top priority, urging caution around downed power lines and advising individuals to report incidents promptly. Residents were reminded to maintain a safe distance from fallen wires and follow safety protocols if a vehicle comes in contact with a downed wire.
