Later, European settlers arrived and started to explore the gorge. One of these settlers, Captain Samuel Watkins, recognized the gorge’s potential and began to develop it as a tourist destination. He built paths and bridges, making it easier for people to enjoy the natural beauty.
In 1906, New York State purchased the land and turned it into a state park. Over the years, the park has grown and improved. Today, millions of visitors come to Watkins Glen State Park each year to hike, swim, and marvel at the breathtaking waterfalls.
