New New York State Boating Law Mandates Safety Courses Starting January 2025

Beginning January 1, 2025, New York State will require all boat operators to complete a mandatory safety course, according to new legislation.

Beginning January 1, 2025, New York State will require all boat operators to complete a mandatory safety course, according to new legislation.

Starting January 1, 2025, a new state law will require all operators of motorized vessels on navigable waterways to possess a valid New York State Boater Safety Certificate. This legislation aims to enhance safety and ensure that all boaters are well-informed about safe practices on the water.

Sheriff Jim Allard highlighted the upcoming change during a recent appearance on WVIN’s Community Focus, stating, “On January 1, 2025, the law changes. Anyone operating a motorized vessel will need to obtain a boater safety certificate.” To assist local residents in meeting this requirement, Steuben County will offer free boater safety classes, with at least one session scheduled each month through next June. Sheriff Allard emphasized the department’s commitment to certifying as many boaters as possible before the new regulations take effect.
