Steuben County experienced a surge in drug-related incidents in June, with 37 overdoses reported and one confirmed fatality, according to county health officials. Additionally, three other deaths are currently being investigated as potential overdoses, reflecting a troubling trend in the region.
The county had only one overdose-related death outside of June this year. From April to May, the number of overdoses nearly doubled, and this high rate persisted through June, raising alarms among local health authorities and the community.
Health officials report that six of the June overdoses are believed to be linked to opioids, while eight others involved different substances. In 22 of the cases, Narcan, an emergency treatment for opioid overdoses, was administered. This figure signifies a notable increase in Narcan usage compared to previous years, highlighting the growing challenge posed by drug overdoses in Steuben County.
Local authorities and health organizations are urging residents to be vigilant and seek help for substance abuse issues, as efforts to combat the crisis are being intensified.
