Straight-as-a-die Main Street comes down from the built-up portion of Hammondsport, crossing Keuka Inlet to make a T at the country lane that more-or-less corresponds to today’s State Route 54, with our Back Valley Road wending off to our left.
The Winding Stair comes up toward us. Back on Main we make out the stone academy building (now apartments). A little to the right we see the Methodist steeple, which makes a short one-two-three line (angling up and left) with the hose-drying tower at the fire company, and the Presbyterian steeple. Almost at the waterfront, curving away from us, we find a Bath & Hammondsport train on the tracks. Bounded by Main, Keuka Lake, and the Inlet is Kingsley Flats, later a hotbed of early aviation.
Beyond the village, on our right, we see what corresponds to County Road 76, and Greyton Taylor Memorial Drive. To the left is the cleft of Hammondsport Glen, then today’s Reservoir Hill Road. And since this is Hammondsport, of course we have a vineyard, resting up for the coming season.
