A man from Waterloo was arrested early Wednesday morning after authorities say he broke into the Bath Ambulance building and was later discovered hanging out of a second-story window.
James L. Dyer, 38, was apprehended after police responded to a report of a break-in at 110 E. Steuben St. in Bath. According to the Village of Bath Police Department, the incident occurred on November 27 while personnel were inside the building. By the time officers arrived at approximately 2:46 a.m., all staff members had evacuated the premises.
Witnesses reported that Dyer allegedly broke the glass on the building’s front door to gain entry. Upon arrival, officers found Dyer hanging partially out of a second-story bathroom window. Despite police instructions to reenter the building and exit safely, Dyer instead climbed onto the roof, where he reportedly refused to cooperate.
The Bath Fire Department intervened, assisting in safely escorting Dyer off the roof following a brief standoff. After being taken into custody, Dyer was transported to Ira Davenport Hospital to receive treatment for self-inflicted injuries.
Dyer now faces charges of second-degree burglary, a class C felony, and criminal mischief, a class D felony. Following his hospital release, he was transferred to the Steuben County Jail to await his court appearance. Dyer has since been released from custody.
The incident saw collaboration between the Bath Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Bath Fire Department, and Bath Ambulance personnel.
