Second-year students in Finger Lakes Community College’s (FLCC) viticulture and wine technology program have selected a striking wine label designed by graphic design student Alexis Ecker of Eden, Erie County. Ecker’s design, titled Astrae Via—Latin for “the way of the stars”—will adorn bottles of wine the viticulture students produce as part of their academic journey.

Ecker’s label reflects a blend of artistry and symbolism, featuring hand-drawn elements that represent navigation and interconnectedness. “I am beyond excited and grateful to be a part of this whole process and to have this opportunity,” said Ecker.

The annual wine label competition, held at the FLCC Viticulture and Wine Center in Geneva, is a much-anticipated event. This year, 17 graphic design students showcased their creations during a gallery-style reception, where viticulture students engaged with the designers to better understand their inspirations and designs. After deliberation, Astrae Via was selected as the winning label.

A Journey Through Design

Ecker’s design features sacred geometry, including stars and a compass intertwined with a flower of life. The six petals of the flower symbolize the viticulture students and their shared journey in winemaking. “The stars remind my classmates to reach for the stars in all that they pursue,” she explained.

The design process began with hand-drawn illustrations, later refined using Adobe Illustrator to incorporate text and layout. Ecker will collaborate with her graphic design instructor, Margaret Pence, and the viticulture students to ensure the label adheres to legal standards for alcoholic beverage packaging. She will also adapt the design for various wine varieties produced by the program.

A Rewarding Opportunity

In addition to seeing her artwork featured on FLCC’s student-made wines, Ecker will receive a $500 scholarship and an internship with Niagara Label, a leading design and printing firm. “I’ve loved my whole experience here. Everyone is personable and willing to help with anything,” Ecker shared. She plans to graduate in spring 2025 and is considering further studies in graphic design or visual communications. Upon graduation, she will join her father, Greg Ecker ’88, as a proud FLCC alum.

A Tradition of Collaboration

The FLCC wine label competition underscores the college’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning and community engagement. Faculty, staff, and students come together to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship, making the event a highlight of the academic year.

The bottles featuring Astrae Via will be available in spring, marking the culmination of the viticulture students’ hard work and a testament to the power of collaboration across disciplines.
