Yates County Postpones Public Hearing on Agricultural Land Addition

The Yates County Legislature closed out 2024 with a packed agenda, addressing financial audits, infrastructure updates, and lingering concerns about ambulance service funding. During public comments, Potter Town Councilman Paul Moberg voiced frustrations over funding disparities in ambulance services.

The Yates County Legislature has postponed a public hearing originally scheduled for Monday to discuss the addition of four agricultural parcels to Agricultural District Number One. The delay comes after officials identified an error in the resolution regarding the acreage, prompting the Legislature to reschedule the hearing to ensure adequate public notice before taking a vote.

The new public hearing date is set for 1 p.m. on January 13th.

The four parcels under consideration consist predominantly of viable agricultural land, as defined by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Their inclusion is aimed at bolstering the county’s agricultural framework and safeguarding its sustainability.

Larry Lewis, co-chair of the county’s Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board, emphasized the importance of the proposal. “Incorporating these parcels serves the public interest by preserving and promoting a robust agricultural industry within the district,” he stated.

Yates County’s Agricultural District Number One is designed to support and protect farmland while fostering economic opportunities in agriculture. Public input will be a key part of the discussion when the hearing resumes in January.
