The Denison Park Pool in Corning has remained closed since the end of the 2022 season, and its future remains uncertain as city officials continue to explore options for repair or replacement.
According to Corning Recreation Director Alex Hamilton, the pool developed a serious leak during the 2022 season that worsened significantly the following year. “In 2023, during spring preparations, we found that water was flowing out almost as fast as we were putting it in,” Hamilton said. A structural analysis conducted by HUNT Engineers and Architects revealed more than 220 feet of linear cracks in the pool’s shell, along with multiple holes.
The pool, which last underwent major repairs after the 1972 flood, was the subject of a funding request through the state’s “NY SWIMS” grant program in 2023. The city sought approximately $5 million to support restoration efforts, but the application was not approved. While no additional grants have been secured, officials say they continue to seek funding and are evaluating the long-term future of aquatic facilities in Corning. “The pool will remain closed until we can secure funding or determine a new direction,” Hamilton said, noting that the city is currently developing a comprehensive aquatics plan.
