Pennsylvania officials confirmed that West Nile Virus has surfaced in mosquito samples across Bradford and Tioga Counties, including in boroughs like Athens, Towanda, Mansfield, and Elkland PAt. These northern tier detections join a growing tally: as of late summer, DEP surveillance shows positive samples in over half of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. In fact, more than 52 counties now carry evidence of WNV.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has recorded 754 positive mosquito samples this yeart. This significant figure underscores the virus’s persistent presence in the region.
While human cases remain limited, Allegheny County has reported Pennsylvania’s first human WNV case of 2025. The patient—a resident of Plum Borough—experienced symptoms like fever, fatigue, diarrhea, and anorexia in mid-July and is recovering at home.
Recommendation for protecting yourself from WNV include;
- Take personal protection seriously—reduce your mosquito exposure and standing water.
- Report stagnant water or suspected mosquito breeding sites to local health authorities.
While West Nile Virus continues to circulate in Pennsylvania, coordinated surveillance and public health strategies are helping keep infection rates low. However, public cooperation remains crucial—especially now, before the first frost.
