Letter of Commendation for Bath Police Sergeant Cherenowsky and Officer Waite

Bath police manage scary situation involving an autistic young lady with great teamwork

From the Bath NY Police Department,

On June 13, 2025, Sergeant Cheresnowsky and Officer Waite were dispatched to a report of an autistic juvenile who had run away from home and onto the railroad tracks in the area of E Morris Street and May Street.

Recognizing the immediate dangers posed by the location – including active train tracks and a body of water – both officers understood the urgency of locating the juvenile to ensure her safety.

Officers quickly searched the area, locating the juvenile in thick brush. The juvenile had sustained an injury and was experiencing a medical emergency. Officers provided immediate care and took turns carrying the juvenile out of the difficult terrain to an awaiting State Police unit. Trooper Romance transported the juvenile and officers onto the main road to an awaiting ambulance.

The quick response, situational awareness, and effective teamwork displayed by Sergeant Cheresnowsky, Officer Waite and Trooper Romance were instrumental in ensuring the juvenile’s safety.
