HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. – A Hammondsport man will serve time in state prison after being convicted on charges related to possessing and promoting child sexual abuse materials, according to the Schuyler County District Attorney’s Office.
James Hopkins, 45, was sentenced to a term of 2⅓ to 7 years following his conviction for promoting a sexual performance by a child under 17, a Class D felony, and possessing a sexual performance by a child, a Class E felony. His arrest stemmed from a 2024 investigation by the New York State Police that began with a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Authorities said the tip led investigators to evidence showing that Hopkins used a mobile messaging app to view and distribute explicit material involving minors. He was taken into custody in September 2024 and has remained in the Steuben County Jail without bail since his arrest.
